ASICS Matflex 5 GS Youth: The perfect starter shoe for youth wrestlers

The ASICS Matflex 5 GS is the updated kid’s version of the Matflex 5. It delivers all the same great comfort and support that Matflex fans have come to expect over the years. It comes with a Full length rubber outsole for great traction from any angle. The upper is made of a lightweight but durable mesh that provides extra breathability. One major design change from the Matflex 4 GS was going back to a laced enclosure, instead of Velcro straps. This will ensure that every youth wrestler is getting secure fit in a wrestling shoe that they need.

Product fit our 4-year-old son perfectly. They are comfortable and fit perfect since we were worried they wouldn't fit. We like how the laces are not too long as well.

Shoes are very durable. We have tried other brands and they don't seem to hold up as well. You can not go wrong with these.

Hi I am looking for shoes for my son. He is a little tiny might and has small feet. He is currently in a size 7 for toddlers and they are a little roomy. Is there anyone that makes wrestling shoes that small? What size should I order? Thank you for your help!

Velcro is so much easier for the kids to get their foot in. And kids from 5-8 can help themself and would not have to struggle tying and untying them. Do you have any option with velcro? Velcro has been perfect for my kids. I see that you have lazeless shoes for adults. Thanks in advance for your answer

    Joey P.'s picture

Unfortunately all velcro shoes have been discontinued by the manufacturer and will not be bringing them back in.

The shoes are in boys sizing but are unisex shoes. The shoes run true to size. It would be good to go half a size up from the original size they wear.

    A size 6 ASICS Matflex is a 37.5 : ) I'd suggest sizing up to a 6.5 if you're looking for a 38/39.

Unfortunately, that would probably be on the tighter end. I'd highly suggest getting a size 6.5 or 7 shoe depending on whether or not you are sizing from your street shoes or existing wrestling shoes : )

How does sizing run my daughter wears a 4 in shoes would it be the same? I want her to be able to wear them 2 seasons at least

    Joey P.'s picture

I would recommend to go a half size up from her normal shoes. If she is a size 4, she will be able to choose from the Adidas Adult shoes now. Adidas adult sizes begin at size 4. She will have a lot more variety to choose from.

  • Question byPink
    on 04 May, 2016

When exactly will these be available in the summer?

    Joey's picture

We hope that the ASCIS Matflex GS 5 new colors will become available near the end of June or early July. However, we cannot give an exact date until we actually have them here in our showroom. With pre-order shoes, we are waiting for the manufacturers to get their large shipments of shoes in from overseas. International shipping can be highly difficult to predict with accuracy, especially when you account for any delays with customs, etc. Once ASICS has them, they still need to do their counts, and get everything ready to be shipped back to us, which can take some time as well. In the past when we've given more exact dates on pre-orders, we very often missed those dates due to delays getting them in stock, which didn't make anyone happy. I'm sure you can understand why we have decided to keep it less specific now.

    on 17 Apr, 2016

If my daughter wears a 7 women's what size wrestling shoe would she wear?

    Joey's picture

That's difficult to answer, as shoe sizing can vary greatly depending on the type of shoe, the brand, etc. Even many wrestling shoes within the same brand often fit differently from each other. That's why it's always best to try them on, but I realize not everybody lives locally to be able to get to our store. Traditionally, we say the difference between men's and women's sizing is about 1-1.5 sizes. So if she's a 7, then she'd fit in a 5.5 or 6 in men's. However, in my experience the Matflex 5 GS tends to run pretty small. I would try to err on the larger end and try a 6 or even 6.5. If they don't fit, you can always exchange them.

That roughly translates to a size 8. The Matflex GS is a youth shoe. I would highly recommend trying the standard Matflex 5 : )
